AARC Is a Preferred VELUX Installation Vendor
Skylights & VELUX
Natural light has the power to transform a home. It opens up tight rooms, brightens dim hallways, reduces reliance on artificial lighting, and brings a real sense of connection to the sky and the world outside. For homeowners looking to harness that power, a professionally installed skylight is one of the highest-impact investments you can make in a property.
As a Preferred VELUX Installation Vendor, AARC brings together world-class products and expert craftsmanship to deliver skylight installations that perform beautifully for decades. Our team handles every step of the project — from initial consultation and product selection through cutting, framing, flashing, shaft finishing, and final cleanup. The result is a watertight, energy-efficient, code-compliant skylight that looks like it was always meant to be there.
Not every contractor can call themselves a VELUX installer. Becoming a Preferred Installation Vendor requires demonstrated expertise, ongoing training, and a track record of installations that meet VELUX’s strict quality standards. Our installations are eligible for VELUX’s full warranty coverage, including the No Leak Promise that backs every properly installed deck-mounted skylight.
Every VELUX Product We Install
Product Lineup
VELUX offers the most comprehensive skylight lineup in the industry. We match the right product to your space, roof type, and goals during every free consultation.
Fixed Skylights
Deck-mounted and curb-mounted fixed skylights for spaces that need maximum light without ventilation. Tempered, low-E coated, argon-filled dual-pane glass standard. The simplest, most economical skylight option — and the most commonly installed.
Manual Venting Skylights
Hand-operated venting skylights that open to allow hot air, steam, and moisture to escape. Ideal for kitchens and bathrooms where occasional manual operation is fine. Lower cost than solar-powered models, same VELUX quality construction and flashing system.
Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylights
VELUX's premium model — opens and closes at the touch of a remote, powered entirely by a built-in solar panel. Includes a moisture sensor that automatically closes the skylight at the first drop of rain. Qualifies for the 30% federal tax credit on purchase and installation. Our most recommended venting option.
Sun Tunnels
For hallways, closets, bathrooms, and stairwells where a full skylight isn't practical. Sun Tunnels capture rooftop sunlight through a small dome and channel it through a highly reflective tube to a ceiling-mounted diffuser — delivering surprising amounts of soft daylight at a fraction of the cost of a full skylight installation.
Blinds & Accessories
VELUX offers factory-installed and aftermarket blinds in dozens of colors and opacities — from room-darkening for bedrooms to light-filtering for living rooms. Solar-powered blinds can be programmed or remotely controlled and qualify for the federal tax credit when installed with a Solar Fresh Air skylight.
Curb-Mounted Skylights
For low-slope and flat-roof sections where deck-mounted skylights aren't appropriate. Curb-mounted units sit atop a framed curb, allowing proper drainage on roofs with minimal pitch. The right specification for additions, sunrooms, and commercial buildings with low-slope roofing.

Our Skylight Installation Process — Start to Finish
Installation Process
Every successful skylight installation starts long before anyone gets on a roof. Here is how AARC approaches a project from first call to final walkthrough.
Consultation & Site Assessment
We begin with a conversation about your goals — more light, ventilation, architectural focal point, or reduced electric use. Our technician inspects your roof structure, attic, and the room below to evaluate framing, electrical considerations, HVAC routing, and any obstacles that need planning around.
Product Selection & Design
We walk you through the VELUX options that fit your space — which series matches your roof pitch, whether fixed or venting makes sense for the room's function, glazing options for your climate and energy goals, and shaft design for maximum light delivery. Being a Preferred Vendor means we have direct access to VELUX technical support for unusual challenges.
Permitting & Scheduling
Most jurisdictions require a permit for skylight installation since the work involves altering the roof structure. AARC handles the permit process on your behalf — pulling the permit, coordinating required inspections, and documenting the work for your records and future resale. A typical residential installation takes one to two days.
Roof Cut & Framing
The opening is carefully measured and cut, and the rafters are reframed with proper headers to maintain structural integrity. This is where corner-cutting installers go wrong — we follow the structural specifications exactly, because an improperly headed opening will sag over time and break the watertight seal.
Skylight Set & Flashing
The VELUX unit is set and secured. Then comes flashing — arguably the most critical phase. We use the model-specific VELUX flashing kit that matches your exact roofing material, layered in the precise order VELUX engineers prescribe. This creates redundant water barriers that protect the opening for the life of the roof. This is the single biggest difference between a Preferred Vendor installation and a generic job.
Light Shaft Construction
Inside the home, we frame and finish the light shaft connecting the rooftop opening to the ceiling below. Straight, flared, or angled shaft depending on your goals. Fully insulated to current code, vapor-sealed, drywalled, taped, mudded, sanded, and primed — ready for paint in your chosen color.
Blinds & Electronics
Blinds and accessories are installed, electronics are synced for venting and solar units, and every function is tested. For Solar Fresh Air models, we program the rain sensor, pair the remote, and walk you through operating every feature before we leave the site.
Final Cleanup & Walkthrough
We do a thorough cleanup inside and out, haul away all debris, and walk you through the finished installation — showing you how to operate the unit, clean the glass, and what to expect seasonally. You receive your VELUX warranty registration and all permit documentation.
Tax Credit Documentation & Support
Solar Powered Fresh Air skylights and qualifying solar blinds are eligible for the 30% federal tax credit. We provide all product documentation for your tax filing at closeout. As a Preferred VELUX Vendor, we also have direct access to VELUX technical support and parts after installation — one call reaches the same team that did the work.
Where Skylights Make the Biggest Difference
Best Applications
Skylights aren’t a one-size-fits-all product. The right unit in the right room can completely transform how a space feels and functions. These are the applications where AARC has seen the most dramatic results — and where your investment delivers the fastest return in quality of life.
For Sun Tunnel applications — hallways, closets, stairwells — the payoff is often even faster. A Sun Tunnel delivers surprising amounts of soft daylight at a fraction of full skylight cost, and can transform perpetually dark transitional spaces that never feel quite right with artificial light alone.
Transparent Skylight Pricing — VELUX Products, AARC Installation
Skylight Installation Pricing in NC
Skylight pricing varies significantly based on product selection, shaft complexity, and roof type. A Sun Tunnel is the most economical entry point. A fixed deck-mounted skylight with a straight shaft is the standard mid-range installation. Solar Powered Fresh Air units with factory blinds represent the premium specification — and the one that qualifies for the 30% federal tax credit. We provide firm written estimates at every free consultation.
Typical ranges: Sun Tunnel $750–$1,500 installed · Fixed skylight $1,500–$3,500 installed · Manual venting skylight $2,000–$4,000 installed · Solar Powered Fresh Air skylight $3,000–$6,000 installed · Solar-powered blinds $400–$800 · 30% federal tax credit applies to Solar Fresh Air units and solar blinds · Permit fees included

Skylight Installation FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Do skylights leak?
Improperly installed skylights leak. Properly installed VELUX skylights with the correct model-specific flashing kit do not. The VELUX No Leak Promise exists because VELUX is confident in what a certified installation delivers. The difference is entirely in the flashing detail and framing — which is exactly why Preferred Vendor status matters.
Will a skylight make my home hotter in summer?
Modern VELUX skylights use low-E coated, argon-filled dual-pane glass that blocks the majority of solar heat gain while still transmitting visible light. Paired with factory-installed solar-powered blinds that can be programmed to close on hot afternoons, a VELUX skylight can actually improve your home’s overall energy performance rather than hurt it. These units are ENERGY STAR certified.
What is the 30% federal tax credit?
Under current IRA provisions, VELUX Solar Powered Fresh Air skylights and qualifying solar-powered blinds are eligible for a 30% federal tax credit on the total purchase and installation cost. We provide all the product documentation you need for your tax filing at project closeout. This makes the Solar Fresh Air model a much more economical choice than its list price suggests.
Do I need a permit for a skylight?
In most NC jurisdictions, yes — skylight installation involves altering the roof structure and typically requires a permit and at least one inspection. AARC handles the permit process on your behalf at no additional charge. The documentation is also important at resale, where an unpermitted structural modification can complicate a transaction.
What is a Sun Tunnel and how is it different from a skylight?
A Sun Tunnel captures sunlight through a small dome on the roof and channels it through a highly reflective flexible or rigid tube to a ceiling-mounted diffuser inside. It delivers surprisingly bright, soft daylight without cutting a full opening through the roof framing — making it ideal for hallways, closets, bathrooms, and other tight spaces where a full skylight isn’t practical. Installation is faster and less expensive than a full skylight.
How long does skylight installation take?
Most residential skylight installations take one to two days from start to finish — including the roof cut, framing, flashing, shaft construction, drywall, and final trim. Sun Tunnel installations are typically completed in a half day. We leave the shaft primed and ready for paint so you can finish it in your chosen color on your own timeline.
