Asphalt Shingle Roofing for North Carolina Homes
The most popular residential roofing material in America — installed by Owens Corning Preferred and CertainTeed Shingle Master certified crews. Up to 50-year manufacturer warranties.

Why Asphalt Shingles Dominate NC Roofing
Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles cover somewhere between 70% and 80% of every residential roof in the United States — not because they are cheap, but because the balance of cost, performance, service life, aesthetic versatility, and warranty coverage that modern asphalt shingles offer is genuinely unmatched. The top-tier products from Owens Corning and CertainTeed carry 50-year non-prorated warranties, deliver wind ratings up to 130 mph, offer Class A fire ratings, and can replicate the visual appearance of wood shake or slate at a fraction of the cost.
Above All Roofing & Construction specializes in asphalt shingle installations. As an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor and a CertainTeed Shingle Master, we hold manufacturer certifications that allow us to offer extended system warranties — up to 50 years non-prorated, including workmanship — that most uncertified contractors in our market simply cannot match. Those certifications require ongoing performance reviews, training, and a documented track record of quality installations. They are not pay-to-play badges. They are earned, and they matter directly to your warranty coverage.
Our asphalt shingle division serves the full Triangle region from Fuquay-Varina and the coastal region from New Bern. We install new construction roofs, full-replacement roofs, and partial repair and replacement work on existing asphalt shingle systems.
The Owens Corning & CertainTeed Shingle Lines We Install
Our Shingle Products
As certified installers for both major manufacturers, we offer the complete professional product range — from entry-level architectural to 50-year premium systems. We bring physical samples to every consultation so you can see the exact product on your roof in natural light.
Owens Corning Duration
OC's flagship architectural shingle. SureNail Technology delivers triple-layer nailing zone reinforcement. TruDefinition color depth for a rich, dimensional look. 130 mph wind warranty. Qualifies for extended Preferred Protection system warranty. Our most commonly recommended Triangle shingle.
Owens Corning Duration Storm
Adds SBS-modified asphalt to the Duration platform — Class 4 impact resistance, the highest rating from UL 2218. In hail-prone NC, Duration Storm can qualify for insurance premium discounts and is dramatically more resistant to hail-bruise damage. Our most recommended shingle for Triangle homes with recurring hail risk.
Owens Corning Duration Flex
The most advanced OC shingle — SureNail platform plus SBS flexibility throughout the entire shingle. Maximum impact resistance, maximum wind uplift performance, extreme weather environments. For coastal hurricane exposure and high-risk Triangle hail zones, Duration Flex is the premium option.
CertainTeed Landmark
CertainTeed's flagship architectural shingle — a true peer to OC Duration. Lifetime limited warranty, 110 mph wind warranty (upgradable to 130 mph with StormFlex), Class A fire rating, extensive color palette. The standard CertainTeed specification for mainstream residential replacements.
CertainTeed Landmark Pro & Premium
Landmark Pro upgrades with a thicker profile and deeper shadow lines. Landmark Premium is CertainTeed's most dimensional architectural shingle — dramatically thicker and heavier, delivering visual impact close to designer shake products at a price point well below them. For homeowners prioritizing curb appeal.
Presidential Shake & Grand Manor
Presidential Shake is one of the most distinctive asphalt shingles on the market — a sculpted shake-profile that genuinely replicates hand-split cedar. Grand Manor is the pinnacle of CertainTeed's lineup — a slate-replica with the deepest shadow lines on any asphalt product. For architectural-statement homes.
The 9 Components of a Proper Shingle Installation
Proper Installation
A shingle roof is not just shingles. Every component must be properly installed for the manufacturer warranty to actually protect you. Here is what goes into every AARC asphalt shingle replacement.
Drip Edge & Starter Strip
Code-compliant metal drip edge along every eave and rake edge, directing water into the gutter and preventing wicking under the shingles. Immediately followed by manufacturer-specific starter strip with factory-applied adhesive — a critical step many contractors skip entirely.
Ice-and-Water Shield
Self-adhered waterproof membrane in valleys, around chimneys, skylights, pipe penetrations, and along eaves. In coastal NC applications, we frequently extend ice-and-water shield over the full deck as a secondary weather barrier.
Synthetic Underlayment
Full-coverage synthetic underlayment across the entire roof deck — tear-resistant, walkable, and far superior to traditional felt for professional installations.
Step & Counter Flashing
New step flashing at every wall-to-roof intersection, new counter flashing where required. No reuse of old flashing — ever.
Valley Metal
Open-valley metal installation or properly woven closed-valley detail per manufacturer specification and homeowner aesthetic preference. Valley detail outlasts the surrounding shingles when done correctly.
Field Shingles to Spec
Shingles installed with the specified number of nails per shingle (typically 6 in high-wind applications), placed in the designated nail zone, at the specified exposure and offset — never overdriven or underdriven.
Pipe Boots & Penetration Detail
Every roof penetration receives new flashing and sealing. Pipe boots have a shorter service life than shingles — replacing them during a full replacement is essentially free insurance against future leaks.
Ridge Vent & Ridge Cap
Continuous ridge vent covered with matching ridge cap shingles. Proper balanced attic ventilation requires both ridge vent and corresponding soffit intake — we assess and upgrade soffit intake as part of the replacement scope if needed.
Color & Style Selection
We bring physical shingle samples and place them on your roof in natural light. We also use Owens Corning and CertainTeed online visualizer tools. You see exactly how the final product looks against your siding before committing.
How to Pick the Right Shingle for Your Home
Choosing Your Shingle
The right shingle for your home depends on several factors — your budget, your wind exposure, your aesthetic goals, and how long you plan to own the property. We walk you through all of it during consultation and bring physical samples so you can see the actual product on your specific roof before committing.
The single most important advice we can give: do not choose a shingle solely on price. The difference between an entry-level architectural and a premium product is typically $1,500–$3,000 on a full replacement — a small increment for 10–20 additional years of service life and a dramatically better warranty.
Transparent Shingle Pricing. Samples in Hand. No Surprises.
Asphalt Shingle Pricing in NC
Most asphalt shingle replacements on single-family homes in our market fall between $8,000 and $22,000 depending on roof size, complexity, and product selection. We provide firm line-item estimates after inspecting your roof — with physical shingle samples so you see exactly what you are buying before you sign anything.

Shingle Warranties — What They Actually Mean
Warranty Coverage
Why Certification Matters to Your Warranty
Premium manufacturer warranties — 50-year non-prorated, transferable — are only available through certified contractors. As an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor and CertainTeed Shingle Master, we unlock warranty tiers that most contractors in our market simply cannot offer. This is the direct, tangible value of our certifications.
System vs. Material Warranty
A material warranty covers the shingles themselves. A system warranty covers the complete installation — shingles, underlayment, accessories, and workmanship — under a single document. Owens Corning Preferred Protection and CertainTeed SureStart PLUS are system warranties. They are far more valuable than material-only coverage.
AARC Workmanship Warranty
Every shingle installation is backed by our written AARC workmanship warranty — on top of the manufacturer system warranty. We register your manufacturer warranty within 60 days of completion and deliver all documentation in your project closeout package.
Asphalt Shingle FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between 3-tab and architectural shingles?
3-tab shingles are a flat, single-layer product with a limited service life and are no longer recommended for NC climate conditions. Architectural (dimensional) shingles are multi-layer, significantly thicker, and deliver a richer dimensional appearance with 30–50 year warranties. We install architectural shingles only.
How do I choose between Owens Corning and CertainTeed?
Both are excellent manufacturers with comparable product quality at equivalent price points. We install both and are certified by both. The choice typically comes down to aesthetic preference — we bring physical samples of both to your consultation so you can see them on your roof in natural light before deciding.
Will my homeowner's insurance discount apply to a Class 4 impact shingle?
Many NC carriers offer meaningful discounts for Class 4 impact-rated shingles such as Duration Storm and Duration Flex. Discount availability depends on your specific carrier and policy. We document the shingle specification for your insurance submission.
How long do asphalt shingles last in North Carolina?
A properly installed 30-year architectural shingle typically delivers 22–28 years of real-world service life in NC. Premium 50-year products, properly installed, will deliver 35–45+ years. NC’s heat, humidity, UV exposure, and storm frequency all accelerate aging versus the rated warranty period.
What is the best shingle for coastal North Carolina?
For coastal homes, we typically recommend Duration Flex (Class 4, maximum wind uplift) or Duration Storm, with a 130 mph wind warranty and ice-and-water shield extended over the full deck. FORTIFIED construction adds additional hurricane hardening on top of the shingle specification.
Can I change to a different shingle color?
Absolutely — many replacements are an opportunity to refresh the home’s appearance. We bring physical samples and can also use the Owens Corning and CertainTeed online visualizer tools to show you different colors applied to a photo of your home before you commit.
