Why Your Roof Matters More in North Carolina
Residential Roofing
Your roof is the most punished component of your entire home. It takes the full force of every thunderstorm, every hurricane remnant, every hailstorm, every ice event, and every 95-degree summer afternoon that North Carolina throws at it — and it is doing all of that while protecting the largest investment most families ever make.
The good news is that a properly installed residential roof, built to manufacturer specification with the right underlayment, flashing, ventilation, and shingle product, can handle all of it and last 25 to 50 years with minimal intervention. The bad news is that a lot of residential roofs in North Carolina were not installed that way.
At Above All Roofing & Construction, residential roofing is the core of what we do. We install new roofs on new construction. We replace aging roofs. We repair storm-damaged roofs. And we inspect roofs for homeowners who just want to know what they are working with — before a sale, before insurance renewal, or before the next hurricane season.

Asphalt Shingles
The most popular residential roofing material in NC. We install Owens Corning Duration, Duration Storm, TruDefinition, and CertainTeed Landmark, Landmark Pro, and Presidential Shake — the full professional line from both manufacturers.
Metal Roofing
The fastest-growing residential roofing category in NC. We install both standing seam (concealed fasteners, 40–50+ year life, premium aesthetic) and exposed fastener (economical, farmhouse-style). Detailed comparison on the metal roofing page.
Synthetic Slate & Composite Shake
The look of natural slate or cedar shake without the weight, maintenance, or cost. DaVinci, CertainTeed Symphony, and Brava products offer 50+ year service life, Class A fire ratings, and impact ratings that qualify for insurance discounts.
Flat & Low-Slope Sections
Many NC homes have a mix of pitched and low-slope sections — over additions, porches, or sunrooms. Low-slope areas require TPO, EPDM, or modified bitumen, not shingles. We handle mixed-slope projects routinely and match the primary roof spec above.
FORTIFIED™ Coastal Systems
Our Navy Veteran-led coastal team installs FORTIFIED™ roof systems — the voluntary hurricane-resistance standard from IBHS. Enhanced deck attachment, sealed roof deck, stronger flashing. Many coastal NC insurers offer substantial premium discounts for FORTIFIED homes.
The 9 Components of a Proper Roof Replacement
What a Real Installation Includes
A roof replacement isn't just tearing off old shingles and nailing on new ones. That's a half-finished job. A real residential roofing system has nine components — and all nine need to be right for the manufacturer warranty to actually protect you.
Tear-Off
All shingles, nails, underlayment, and damaged flashing removed down to the bare deck. We never install new shingles over old ones — overlay jobs trap heat, hide rot, and void manufacturer warranties.
Deck Inspection & Repair
With the old roof off, we walk the plywood or OSB deck. Any rotted, delaminated, or water-damaged sheathing is documented with photos and replaced before new material goes on. Deck repair is quoted by the sheet and is a line item on your estimate.
Drip Edge
Metal drip edge along every eave and rake edge directs water into gutters and away from fascia. Required by code but frequently omitted or installed incorrectly by low-bid contractors. We install it at every edge, properly lapped, in the correct color for your trim.
Ice & Water Shield
Self-adhered waterproof membrane installed in valleys, around chimneys and skylights, and along eaves. On coastal NC homes we frequently extend ice-and-water shield across the full roof deck as a secondary barrier against wind-driven rain.
Synthetic Underlayment
A full layer of synthetic underlayment across the entire deck — stronger, tear-resistant, and walkable versus traditional felt. It provides a second line of defense against water intrusion and a temporary weather barrier if the project is interrupted.
Step & Counter Flashing
New metal flashing at every transition — chimneys, walls, dormers, skylights. This is where the majority of leaks occur on poorly installed roofs. We never reuse old flashing. New step flashing in every valley, new counter flashing at every wall-to-roof junction.
Starter Strip
A dedicated starter strip along every eave and rake edge before field shingles go down. Starter strip provides the adhesive bond that keeps the first shingle course from lifting in high winds. Improvised starter strips from cut-down field shingles are a cut-corner warning sign.
Field Shingles to Spec
Shingles installed to the exact nailing pattern, exposure, and offset specified by the manufacturer — 4–6 nails per shingle depending on wind exposure, placed in the designated nail zone, never overdriven or underdriven. This detail separates a warrantied installation from one that fails at year 8.
Ridge Cap, Vents & Cleanup
Ridge vents for balanced attic ventilation, matching ridge cap shingles. Pipe boots, roof vents, and all penetrations flashed and sealed. Multiple magnetic nail sweeps of the site before we leave. Final photos taken and added to your project file.
How to Tell If Your Roof Has Reached Its Limit
Signs Your Roof Needs Replacement
If you are unsure whether your roof needs replacement or targeted repair, here are the signs our inspectors look for during every walkthrough. The presence of one or two of these does not automatically mean replacement — but three or more, especially on a roof over 18 years old, usually does.
We will always tell you honestly. If repair can extend your roof’s life, we will quote you a repair. We do not push full replacements when they’re not warranted — that’s what most of our five-star reviews mention specifically.
Honest Pricing.
No Vague Bids.
Residential Roofing Costs in NC
The honest answer is: it depends. A roof replacement in NC is priced by roof square (100 sq ft of roof area) — not by home square footage. Several factors affect the final number. We give you a firm, line-item written estimate after inspecting the property. No “roof replacement — $X” bids. You see every material, every labor component, and every warranty option before you sign anything.
Key pricing factors: roof size & complexity · pitch & access · material spec · deck repair required · penetrations · region (Triangle vs coastal)

Residential Roofing FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a residential roof installation take?
Most single-family asphalt shingle replacements are completed in one day. Larger homes or projects with complex architecture (multiple valleys, dormers, skylights) or deck sheathing replacement can take two to three days. Metal roof installations typically take three to five days.
Will I need to leave my home during the installation?
No, in almost all cases homeowners remain at home during the project. We will ask you to move vehicles out of the driveway to avoid dropped nails and debris, and recommend removing fragile items from walls and shelves (a roof installation causes vibration that can rattle pictures). But you can live in the home normally throughout.
Do you handle insurance claims for storm damage?
Yes — insurance restoration is one of our specialties. We will meet your insurance adjuster on-site, document damage in Xactimate (the industry estimating software carriers use), and manage the claim workflow from initial inspection through final payment. See our Insurance Claims page for a full breakdown.
What happens if it rains during my roof installation?
We monitor weather constantly and will not start a tear-off if rain is forecast within the installation window. If weather changes unexpectedly mid-project, our crews immediately tarp the exposed deck with weighted heavy-mil plastic, secure the work area, and resume as soon as conditions allow. No section of your home will ever be left exposed overnight.
Can you match my existing roof color?
Yes, as long as the manufacturer still produces that product. We carry physical shingle samples and will pull the specific color match. If the original shingle is no longer in production, we will find the closest current match and show it to you on your roof before you commit.
Do you offer financing?
Yes — we partner with financing providers offering 0% introductory rates and low-APR long-term options. Ask about financing during your consultation and we’ll walk through the options. We also offer military discounts for active-duty, veterans, and reservists.
